Post 1 of 3

Last week, you were able to explore the world of Student Response Systems by using a website called Socrative.  This a free website that allows you to engage your students with customized educational activities and online quizzes.  There are many wonderful settings and features to this website.  I happen to like the fact that your students can access the quizzes you've created by logging into to an iDevice, Tablet, Laptop, or Computer that has Internet, in order to complete their assignment.

Please use Socrative to create a quiz about the 9 Elements of Digital Citizenship.  We covered most of this material in class last week but you should also have read about this in Chapter 1 and 2 of your textbook.  Please create this quiz as if you were addressing students...be creative with your questions.  Try to use different types of questions (i.e. multiple choice, short answer, true or false).  I will expect to see these next week in class (February 12, 2013).

You will need to create a free, Login with the Getting Started tab.  Make sure to watch the Video on the Home Page to help give you some guidance.  Then you will continue to the Teacher Login and create your quiz.

Please respond to this blog post with your reflection of this assignment.  See the following questions to help guide you.

What features did you like?  dislike?
Was it user friendly?
How do you see this being used in your classroom?
Explain why you don't see this as a beneficial tool?
What features would you like to see added?

  1. I like it because it very simple and user friendly. It will help the teacher to create a series of quizzes and exercises. It can be used as per-test and post- test to gather data about students understanding about the topic. It is pre-designed so any quiz can be created in minutes. Best feature is the automatic grading system for multiple choice Teachers can create variety of questions and receive online report about students performance. I don't see any reason for to be a beneficial tool. Students love working on computer. Not only that it will be beneficial for students with special needs. Usually they get overwhelmed by the quiz packet. They would start complaining about number of pages in the packet without looking at the questions that they capable of. If the quizzes or exercises are online they won't be able to count the pages and work without getting frustration. Logins are easy for teachers and students too.It can be saved and access any time and even share with other teachers. It also generate student responses in charts and graphs. The features I would like to add is auto grading for true and false.

  2. I like that you can set the quizzes to teacher paced or student paced. I wish the website allowed you to simply drag the questions to rearrange the order instead of having to keep clicking the up and down arrows. I thought the site was user friendly and easy to navigate. This could be used in the classroom as an alternative to paper and pencil quizzes and to track student progress. The student paced feature allows students to work at their own pace, while the teacher paced quiz gives immediate feedback. I could see this being very motivating for students, however with the use of any technology, the teacher has to be willing to incorporate it into the classroom. I do like the idea of being able to import quizzes and share quizzes!

  3. This seems to be a very straight forward and easy to use tool. I really like the share option and think that it could prove beneficial for collaborations and feedback. I also really like the space race. It adds a little competition and fun and would be very useful for test review.
I think my favorite thing was the ability to import a quiz created in excel. The included template was easy to use and allowed for the easier rearrangement of the questions that Abby referenced.

  4. I really like the Socrative program and it is a program I will definitely want to use in a classroom to engage my students. I really like that you can set the test to a Teacher or Student Pace. With that being said I like that if we do choose to use the Teacher Pace version we can hide student responses so that they are not put in full display for everyone to see. Further, I really like that the results are emailed to the teacher. One of the things I do like the most is that it is a program or App that can be downloaded to any device. It isn't specific to an iPad or Nook or Kindle but it is compatible with all electronic devices and this is very important to ensure all students can access the program regardless of electronic devices that they have or that are provided to them.

Socrative is very user friendly. I can see myself using it during transitions to lessons to revise prior work or engage students in preparing them for the next lesson. I can also see myself using the student pace feature by providing students a simple question (in which they will use critical thinking skills) and take their time answering it (maybe like a question of the week) which they can take the entire week to provide a response to.

In addition to the Digital Citizenship quiz, I created another one and had my daughter take the quiz just to see how it worked. It was fun and engaging.

  5. Using socrative was very easy to follow. I think that it can be beneficial if I had more devices in the classroom. I can see using it for the weekend or a homework assignment, which might work a little easier until technology is more available in classrooms.

One thing that I am concerned about would be doing this in class at student pace and then having some students finish really fast while others take a while. I suppose I would have to have another activity or site lined up for students to explore when finished.

Overall I think this is a great tool and can be used for either formal assessment or informal two question quizzes.
